AKM is part of an educational evaluation introduced by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture under the “freedom to Learn” program. The assessment focuses on measuring students’ basic competencies, not just in academic subjects, but also essential life and work-related skills.

At the vocational high school level (SMK/MAK), the AKM assesses two main aspects. The first is Reading Literacy: students’ ability to understand, analyze, and use information from texts—not only academic texts but also practical texts relevant to everyday life and work. The second is Numeracy: students’ ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts in various situations, including real-world problem-solving related to business, technology, and industry.

The goal of AKM is to ensure that graduates not only master technical skills but also possess critical thinking and problem-solving abilities essential for the increasingly complex workforce.
